(I'll keep this spoiler-free, in case anyone hasn't seen the movie yet)
My nerdery is very wide, for the most part, but there are some pockets of the spectrum that I really haven't delved too deeply into. Star Trek is one of them. I had seen a few issues here and there, knew characters, and had seen 2 or 3 of the movies, but the only lasting aspect of the Star Trek universe was this .gif file.
No, I will not give you any context.
Anyways, I was interested in the idea of rebooting the Star Trek franchise, because franchises tend to get stale after a while: it's the nature of the beast. So we went to the IPic at Bayshore Mall, grudgingly paid $14 a seat, and watched the movie.
And I gotta say, it was well, well worth the money. It follows the same line of thinking for every "first" movie, in that there's a lot of setup and character background, but the way they explain this new continuity is downright genius. A great movie with fun action, big explosions, and lots of humor, I can pretty much recommend it to anybody that likes watching movies. Everyone I saw the movie with loved it, even to the point of wanting to go back and watch the original series.
So while you're waiting for the nice weather to finally stay here for good, do yourself a favor and see Star Trek in the theater. THIS is the reason the movies are shown on a 40 foot screen.
